Event Information

This year sees the 30th anniversary of girls being admitted to the lower years of Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School. Although there had already been one year of girls in the Lower Sixth, the school did not start on its journey to becoming fully co-educational until 1988. Although 30 years is a very short period in a school’s history that is preparing to celebrate its four hundredth anniversary in 2024, the introduction of girls to the whole school was a pivotal moment. Having been threatened with closure in 1986 due to national trends towards establishing larger schools, Borlase decided, somewhat controversially at the time, to open its doors to girls. It is now a thriving co-educational school with the same positive and ambitious ethos that has marked its previous history, but with a new appeal as a popular mixed grammar school. To celebrate how Borlase has continued to flourish since its transformation into a co-educational school, the Old Borlasian Club, which itself was established over one hundred years ago, is hosting an Afternoon Tea at the school on Saturday 6th October. It is hoped that the event will see the return of many of the students present during the first few years of girls at the school, including in particular the 1987 and 1988 cohorts, as well as more and less recent alumni . The event promises not just to be a relaxing trip down memory lane, with the opportunity to re-live Chapel Assembly, but also an introduction to the school site as it is now. Afternoon tea will be taken on the Cloisters, with musical accompaniment from current students and guests will be welcome to bring their families. Date: Saturday, 6th October 2018 Time: 3.00pm Cost: Adults £15, Children £12
